Overview: URC/CHS is seeking an executive with proven business development and communication experience and a proven collaborative working style to lead its Business Development and Communications Department.

The Vice President for Business Development and Communications (VPBDC) works with key company leadership to develop strategic plans for URC’s business development and growth. URC has an impressive record for growth over the past decade, and the VPBDC will be expected to help build on that success to promote growth and stability for the company. The Business Development Unit supports the technical divisions in maintaining and building business with existing clients (primarily USAID). A key requirement of this position is to develop new business areas with existing and new clients. The Business Development and Communications Group also has lead responsibility for promoting URC’s position in the marketplace through effective communications and outreach.

The Vice President reports directly to the President and serves as an integral member of the corporate executive management team. S/he will be responsible for two critical functions: supporting the proposal development process and implementing strategies to identify business opportunities from public, private, academic and international sources. The Vice President is responsible for working across the organization with senior leaders and staff from various divisions and country programs. The Vice President will advance the URC/CHS mission and raise the organization’s visibility through targeted and strategic outreach.

The Business Development and Communications Unit is a new initiative at URC. It is critical that the VPBDC understand and complement the business development strategies that have fostered URC’s growth. The successful candidate also must bring innovation and leadership to help URC thrive in a challenging international marketplace. Emphasis is placed on establishing best practices and rallying other units together around the organization’s high performance. S/he will contribute to longer-term proactive communications and outreach strategy as well as market research and trends analysis, and country and regional-level business strategies. Management, mentoring and coaching of assigned team members within the business development, communications and media units is expected. Job expectations, particularly in the first year, will focus on building a business development team with the necessary skills and training to support the programmatic divisions that have driven URC’s success and growth

Opportunity Responsibilities:

· Build an effective and efficient business development unit to support the ongoing work and new business development needs of URC

· Support URC leadership’s annual business development planning process and play a key role in execution of the plan.

· Develop, in consultation with URC leadership, the policies and procedures and training necessary for an effective Business Development Unit

· Coordinate business development and partner outreach across development and geographic Divisions, as well as donor relationship managers across URC/CHS – with a particular focus on developing and executing proactive fundraising efforts in support of strategic priorities.

· Engage with staff and leaders outside the development and communications departments to identify how best to convey the needs of the organization around its mission and programs.

· Develop and execute strategies to attract new funders for both unrestricted and restricted funding in the United States and internationally.

· Develop proposal and marketing awareness and skills for relevant staff across URC/CHS.

· Manage and enhance donor relationship management and donor contact management databases, as well as other systems and processes that support the effectiveness of the new business and fundraising function.

· Assist the President & CEO and senior staff in conducting meetings with high-potential donors.

Proposal and Business Development Responsibilities:

· In collaboration with URC leadership, develop a proposal development process that is efficient and promotes success. Mentor and build capacity of Business Development Unit Staff.

· Lead the proposal development team in forecasting, identifying and tracking new business opportunities.

· Manage the proposal process for significant URC business opportunities ensuring that proposals meet funder specifications and deadlines; conduct research for and draft proposal sections as necessary.

· Work with program officers, country representatives, and other staff to conceptualize and design proposals for new project activities and/or amendments to current projects.

· Facilitate bid decision-making process.

· Coordinate with Grants & Contracts and Finance divisions for budget review and approvals and to negotiate final awards with donors.

· Develop appropriate policies and procedures to negotiate partnership arrangements and budgets; coordinate teaming agreements, memoranda of understanding, and other institutional agreements with partners.

· Identify new sources of funding and opportunity; monitor and share information from outside sources of news, including political and security information.

Communications Responsibilities:

· Provide leadership and supervision to the Communications and Media Units responsible to:

· Direct overall corporate communications with internal and external stakeholders, including donors, partner agencies, other development organizations, the media, staff.

· Communicate URC/CHS’s innovative approaches and successes to relevant audiences, including donors, policy makers, development practitioners and job seekers through print, electronic media and public events.

· Represent URC/CHS to key individuals, government and private institutions, making donor-related or publicity calls and effectively promoting the organization.

· Supervise the development, roll-out, and management of URC/CHS’s brand and associated communication vehicles and materials.

· Supervise the development and execution of corporate marketing communications strategy, including:

· Ensuring the creation and development of relevant communication pieces to different public and private donor audiences, including marketing collateral, website content, social media outreach, etc.

· Ensuring careful coordination of the marketing and communications plans, social marketing activities, and products including managing effective public relations.

· Overseeing efforts to improve communications capabilities across the organization.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Experience & Qualifications

· Advanced management or public health degree.

· At least 10 years of experience with the USG proposal, grant and contracting process, particularly USAID.

· A proven ability to understand company business operations and history in order to effect necessary changes

· Demonstrated ability to implement effective new business or fundraising policies and strategies, record of network development and contacts within the international development arena

· Ability to conceptualize, plan and implement a strategic approach to building relationships and developing proposal approaches

· Proven ability to interact confidently and comfortably to build solid relationships with senior URC executives as well as partners, clients and funding organizations.

· Ability to develop knowledge management system to support the business development process.

· A track record as an effective communicator who is articulate and persuasive verbally and in writing.

· Outstanding and meaningful references from qualified professional referees.

· Ability to travel quarterly.

Desired Experience & Qualifications

· 15 years of successful experience managing international development/health and or corporate community engagement/corporate social responsibility. Familiarity with health care programs in developing countries desirable.
