Objectives of the internship:

To give interns the opportunity to gain professional experience with UNHCR and to contribute to the realization of the Office's mandate in in the Dominican Republic.

To offer interns training and skills development in the area of programme and project management, reporting, resource mobilization, and international human rights law.

Applicant Profile:

Interns tend to be undergraduate or master's students in the field of law, political and social sciences or international relations. To benefit from the programme, interns must be able to work with a high level of autonomy and to demonstrate initiative, flexibility and commitment in the tasks and lines of work assigned by the supervisor. Interns must be fluent in English, and have at least an intermediate level of fluency in Spanish. A vocation for the promotion and defense of human rights, enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, share and contribute with academic and professional robustness is especially valued. Interns are expected to work on concrete programmatic issues, being conscious of the positive contribution they make with their work to the UNHCR Office. Administration of the internship:

Direct supervision shall be the responsibility of the Programme Officer, as per the standard office working hours established by the UNCT (37.5 hours weekly, Monday to Friday). The internship will be for a non-renewable period of 3 to 6 months, with final dates to be agreed. At the end of the internship, the supervisor shall indicate in a personal interview if the terms of the internship agreement were satisfied. If so, the intern shall receive a standard note indicating the period of the internship and the tasks carried out. The supervisor has the option of including additional comments or observations.

Activities:

The intern's contributions and support will be related to the following work areas:

  • Monitoring of UNHCR partner projects in country;
  • Assisting in the drafting of internal and external reports;
  • Assisting in the organization of training activities, including preparation of materials and logistical aspects;*

Conditions:

Internships with UNHCR are unpaid. The intern, the funding institution or the respective government, must cover all costs linked to the programme, including the costs of transportation to the Dominican Republic, maintenance, accommodation and medical insurance. UNHCR is not responsible for costs associated with accidents or illnesses occurring during the programme. Interns must have medical insurance or its equivalent. Interns must fully comply with the general conditions of UNHCR's internship programme. Obtaining visas, where necessary, and compliance with the Dominican Republic’s migratory laws, is the responsibility of the intern.

Subsequent employment with UNHCR:

There is no possibility of working for UNHCR at the end of the internship. Interns are not eligible to fill UNHCR posts, including consultancies, during their internship and for a period of six months afterwards. Initial training and presentation of final work:

At the start of the programme, interns must complete five mandatory UNHCR courses (online). They shall also receive initial training and an orientation talk about UNHCR's mandate and work in the country.


How to apply:

Applicants must send their application by email (echeverm@unhcr.org), indicating the dates proposed for the internship and with 'Programme Management Internship' in the subject line. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, with the process to be completed by February 6th. The application consists of an introductory letter, addressed to the Programme Officer, indicating the applicant’s objectives in undertaking an internship with UNHCR, how the internship fits within their career plan, and describing any previous practical experience you may have had. A curriculum vitae should be attached, along with letters of recommendation or references, if available.

After being selected for the internship, the applicant shall be asked to complete and send the following information to the office:

  • Signed internship agreement (in English)
  • Confidentiality agreement
  • Signed UNHCR code of conduct
  • Certificate of good health
  • Medical insurance certificate
