SUMMARY:

Counterpart International is seeking an Activity Director to oversee the implementation of a civil society strengthening / organizational capacity building project occurring in South America. From Headquarters, the Activity Director will be responsible for providing high-level technical expertise in related fields such as organizational development, policy research and public dialogue; monitoring and troubleshooting project implementation; ensuring the project meets key deadlines and supplies key deliverables; overseeing the performance of field staff, contractors, and consultants; and overseeing reporting and results management. It is anticipated that the Activity Director will be based at Counterpart Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide overall vision and strategic management of the program.
• Provide technical leadership on issues of civil society strengthening, civil society enabling framework and legal structures, and related disciplines.
• Lead the design and implementation of program components and strategies.
• Serve as primary liaison to the donor and the field.
• Remotely oversee implementation of project activities by field staff.
• Ensure the highest quality of program monitoring, evaluation, reporting and communications.
• Ensure compliance with Counterpart and donor rules and regulations, particularly with respect to financial and grant management.
• Supervise and provide mentoring and professional development support to project staff, with emphasis on building capacity of national staff.
• Travel to recipient countries is anticipated, entailing up to four trips to South America each year.

REQUIREMENTS

• Master’s degree or other advanced degree in social sciences, community development, communications, business, international development, and/or other related field
• Minimum of eight years progressively responsible management experience, with significant experience in civil society enabling and assistance
• Three years of experience working in or with Central and South America
• Extensive experience remotely managing projects in locations where travel is restricted or impossible; ideally including experience managing programs in settings that are politically or physically insecure for project staff and/or partners
• The ideal candidate will possess experience in information safety, in developing internal procedures emphasizing the same, and in ensuring compliance by staff and partners
• Proven leadership, management and decision-making skills
• Candidate should be able to demonstrate the ability to demonstrate a high degree of personal discretion.
• Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communications skills to meet the diverse technical and managerial requirements of the program and to effectively coordinate with a wide range of stakeholders
• Experience with gender integration a plus
• A commitment to equity for women and marginalized groups is expected of all Counterpart employees
• Fluency in English and Spanish are required
