1) Rationale and context of the assignment. The UNICEF Annual Report is a communication and public advocacy tool reporting on results for children achieved by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) with its partners in development and humanitarian spheres.The report highlights programme achievements within a calendar year, in consideration of the impact of global developments and placing successes within the context of UNICEF’s role as a member of the United Nations System. The 2014 report will be structured around UNICEF’s Strategic Plan 2014-2017 with focus on seven outcome areas (health; HIV and AIDS; water, sanitation and hygiene; nutrition; education; child protection; and social inclusion) and cross-cutting areas of gender equality and humanitarian action.

The report has been produced annually since 1972, with wide dissemination in several languages through UNICEF’s network of country and regional offices and National Committees. UNICEF’s Division for Communication (DOC) leads the development and production of the report for release at the annual session of the UNICEF Executive Board in June. Both print and digital versions of the report were produced in 2014.

DOCis seeking a consultant researcher to support the Editor in producing the *UNICEF Annual Report 2014*for release at the annual session of the UNICEF Executive Board, 16-19 June 2015.

2) Scope of Work: The consultant researcher will support the development of content for the global *UNICEF Annual Report 2014*through research, analysis, drafting and supporting related production processes.

3) Responsibilities:

· Review Country Office Annual Reports, Regional Analysis Reports and Divisional Annual Reports, and prepare research outlines for review by the supervisor.

· Along with the supervisor, meet with or write to focal points in several HQ Divisions to solicit input for the report

· Review the various drafts of the Annual Report of the Executive Director of UNICEF {EDAR), and ensure consistency with the manuscript of the UNICEF Annual Report 2013.

· Assist in reviewing the manuscript of the report to identify gaps and any areas requiring additional clarification.

· Compile information sources and complete preliminary fact-checking . Work closely with the Publications Section fact-checking team to verify qualitative and quantitative information included in the report

· Help review page proofs of the publication, as required.

· Assist with other editorial support functions as requested by the supervisor.

8) Performance indicators for evaluation of results: *(e.g. timeliness, value of services rendered in relation to their costs, etc.).*Flexibility; teamwork; willingness to work long hours, as needed; ability to work under deadline pressure; ability to work independently and to demonstrate initiative; precision and attention to detail.

9) Qualifications or specialized knowledge/ experience required:

An advanced university degree in social sciences; professional work experience, ideally with UNICEF, the UN or other development organizations; very strong analytical and research skills, both quantitative and qualitative; excellent writing skills.
