Project Description:

FHI 360’s Social and Economic Development (SED) Business Unit encompasses a diverse collection of programs and expertise, comprising broad, cross-cutting development sectors. SED’s work ranges from civil society and peacebuilding, economic development and livelihoods, environment, gender, technology and youth.

The New Business Director is responsible for developing new business opportunities for SED sectors in collaboration with SED’s Business Unit Director and technical experts. S/he is responsible for coordinating SED business opportunities, ensuring an active pipeline of bids in capture and preparation, and managing market intelligence gathering and dissemination. The Director will work closely with SED staff to make strategic decisions on investments in new business growth areas, pursuing specific funding opportunities, and strategic partnerships. S/he will develop an extensive network of partners and proposal writers/editors that are relevant to SED sectors and will cultivate relationships with non-USG donors including private foundations and other government and multilateral donors.

Performance in this position will be measured by successful development and execution of business plans, diversification of donors and partner organizations, and facilitation of contract and grant wins.

Job Summary / Responsibilities:

The SED New Business Director will be a member of SED’s senior leadership team be responsible for the following:

  • Lead the development and execution of a SED market and business development plan in coordination with SED sector leads
  • Review strategic bid opportunities in collaboration with SED staff and approve and draft bid strategies, allocation of proposal dollar resources, and proposal pricing strategies
  • Provide oversight and mentoring of business development activities occurring within SED’s departments including providing support to Department business development initiatives
  • Coordinate business development learning and training sessions including developing and leading training for SED staff
  • Work with SED staff to gather and disseminate market intelligence
  • Expand SED’s networks, contacts, and relationships with donors and strategic partners
  • Assist SED sectors in obtaining cost share for proposals
  • Ensure SED business development staff are kept informed of external current trends in the industry and internal policy and procedures related to business and proposal development
  • Develop capture strategies and lead proposal teams as necessary
  • Serve as a proposal reviewer for SED-led bids
  • Supervise SED’s Proposal Development Manager
  • Assist with recruitment of senior-level staff (including COPs and other technical staff)
  • Maintain, develop and refine SED/FHI 360 cross-sectoral cape statements
  • Write and maintain SED success stories
  • Design and manage SED thought leadership events
  • Identify, support and coordinate innovation grant proposals for FHI Foundation funding

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or its International Equivalent - Business Administration, Human Development Sciences or Related Field.
  • Minimum of 11 years of relevant professional experience and a bachelor’s degree or 9 years of experience and a master’s degree.
  • At least 10 years of experience working along the entire spectrum of the business cycle and all business development functions: strategy development, opportunity planning, positioning, design, capture, partnering, recruiting, pricing, writing, and negotiations.
  • Experience working on USAID contract and grant opportunities required.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi-sectoral teams and lead, develop and implement strategy and business plans.
  • Strong understanding of the contract and grant opportunities within SED’s portfolio Demonstrated track record of winning USG and other donor work.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Ability to collaborate across sectors and technical areas
  • Ability to work in high pressure situations with hard deadlines
  • Excellent oral and writing communication skills
