ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provides leadership and vision to the Development and Communications Unit. Develops and implements an integrated marketing, communication and fundraising plan in conjunction with the General Secretary for The General Board of Global Ministries.
- Assists the General Secretary as needed by serving as a spokesperson and as a representative of Global Ministries on issues related to Development and Communication.
- Supervises all Development and Communication staff through directing the work, including hiring new staff, developing job descriptions for each position, conducting annual performance reviews, and providing ongoing, regular, consistent feedback and supervision regarding performance issues.
- Serves on cabinet, the leadership team of the organization. Represent the work of the unit to cabinet. Provides input and support to the overall organizational goals.
- Provides strategic visioning and execution of objectives of the Fund and Business Development and Advance sub-units. Provides oversight and guidance to achieve its target.
- Be held accountable for adherence to the budget for the Unit set by the Board of Directors and overseen by the office of the General Treasurer (the Board’s CFO position) and the work of the Finance and Administration unit; providing regular budget updates to the General Secretary and General Treasurer upon request, and providing oversight for all use of the Board funds in a manner that upholds the highest level of stewardship and integrity.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Manage the Communication and Development efforts to ensure they are integrated and supporting the priorities of The General Board of Global Ministries.
- Direct the leadership team of the unit.
- Create and implement an annual development plan and strategy to meet and exceed annual fundraising targets.
- Represent the organization in meeting with donors, churches, and annual conferences.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Masters’ degree or equivalent experience required, preferably in Development or Communications or related field.
- Training or certifications in the areas of leadership training, executive coaching, strategic planning, project management and fundraising or board development a major plus.
- Must have at least 7 to 10 years of experience in a leadership or managerial position in a faith based or similar nonprofit or related organization or field.
- At least 5 years’ experience with demonstrated success leading a Fundraising/Business Development unit.
- Experience leading an organization of similar size and mission, or providing increasingly responsible leadership in a management capacity. Experience at the Conference level is an asset.
- Exceptional strategic planning, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities are essential.
- Demonstrated success in leadership in an international non-profit organization, knowledge of mission related programming and significant experience in managing people and finances are strongly preferred.
- An understanding of and ability to work effectively in the structure of The United Methodist Church and strong commitment to the values of social justice and mission theology are required.
