INTERN POSITION TITLE: Government Affairs Intern (Unpaid)

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
The American Refugee Committee is a global non-profit organization based in the Midwest of the United States. We have worked with refugees around the world for more than 30 years, and help nearly 2.5 million people a year throughout Africa and Asia. ARC is building a 21st Century humanitarian organization rooted in co-creating with committed people to provide more meaningful solutions to humanitarian crises worldwide. ARC teams operate programs in Somalia, the Darfur region of Sudan, South Sudan, Rwanda, Uganda, Pakistan and Thailand. For example, relief teams on the ground in Somalia offer life-saving services such as clean water, health care, sanitation, employment opportunities, and programs to keep women and children safe.
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The primary purpose of this internship is to support the DC-based Government Affairs Director with coverage of issues related to humanitarian and development programming that most directly affect the American Refugee Committee.
SCOPE OF WORK:
· Support ARC’s Washington representative with keeping track of weekly schedule of relevant meetings, briefings, events and hearings in DC
· Help monitor relevant issues before Congress and Federal budget related to humanitarian and development accounts
· Help monitor activities of InterAction’s and other coalitions various working groups focused on overseas humanitarian and development work
· Support program development efforts such as researching donor priorities, funding and trends
· Research opportunities with Foundations, non-traditional and non-core USG funders
· Support and respond to HQ and ARC field information requests
QUALIFICATIONS
· Graduate or Undergraduate student
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· A demonstrated interest in international humanitarian, refugee and development issues
· Familiarity with USAID, State Department and foreign aid-related programs supported by U.S. government agencies preferred
· Field and travel experience
· Interest in US and international politics as it relates to humanitarian/development assistance
· Computer proficiency, including MS Office applications and internet research
