This is an unpaid internship.
PURPOSE: The International Rescue Committee in Baltimore created the Community Integration Program (CIP) in January 2011. The aim of the CIP is to assist refugees to successfully navigate challenges encountered during the resettlement process and build mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders in communities where refugees are resettled to create a secure, welcoming, and multicultural environment. In order to achieve this aim, the CIP creates programs and initiatives to help refugees become self-reliant, socially integrated, and civic-minded assets of the community.
The Community Integration Assistant intern will work closely with the Community Integration & External Relations Program Manager on a wide variety of programs and initiatives. These include the Services to Older Refugees, Economic Development, Immigration, and Safety and Security Programs. The position will liaise with other IRC Baltimore staff members, and new and existing external partners such as community and ethnic organizations, local nonprofits, media, and churches and other religious institutions.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Create IRC Baltimore materials for external relations, and flyers and brochures to recruit refugee participants for events and programs.
· Develop a list of immigrant-friendly religious institutions in the Baltimore metropolitan area.
· Maintain a database of participants served as part of Older Refugees Program, and follow up on referrals made for older refugees.
· Help represent the Community Integration Program at community meetings.
· Assist clients in navigating the legal system.
· Recruit refugee and asylee clients for new and ongoing initiatives.
· Help develop a survey tool for immigration services and administer the tool to clients who have received services.
· Other duties as needed.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1) Learn how to market new programs to a wide array of language and ethnic groups.
2) Develop skills to represent agencies in different contexts.
3) Learn best practices for making “mainstream” services accessible to refugees and limited-English-proficient families.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Completion of an undergraduate degree or current college student
· Prior experience working with refugees or immigrants
· Experience in office administration
Detail- and process-oriented, ability to multi-task
· Highly motivated, organized, and professional
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills
· Ability to work well with a culturally diverse staff and immigration population, willingness to learn about cross-cultural communication and ethnic backgrounds of refugees
· Willing to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts
· Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English
TIME COMMITMENT:
· This position is for 15 hours to 37.5 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks in the fall. (The IRC is open weekdays only, but the ability to work the occasional event on a weeknight or weekend is preferred.)
