Background:The Documentary Group LLC, through its subsidiary Ten Times Ten [10x10] LLC, has received USAID funding to implement an innovative three-year advocacy program on girls' education in India, Nigeria, and Democratic Republic of Congo. The program is currently in the beginning of its second year.

The program, "Empowering Next Generations to Advance Girls' Education" (ENGAGE), is a component of the larger Global Girl Rising Campaign. A central component of the Girl Rising campaign (www.girlrising.com) is the widely acclaimed 102-minute feature film, Girl Rising. The campaign capitalizes on the momentum created by the film, using multimedia tools and social mobilization techniques to effectively target audiences. In India, the partnership will bring together the best in public and private sector resources and know-how toward closing the gender gaps that persist in education and securing a better future for girls. The partnership's three main objectives include:

  • Objective 1: Increase public attention, awareness, engagement, and actions around the importance of equitable, quality education for all and the need to eliminate gender disparity in education.
  • Objective 2: Mobilize and engage men, women, and school-aged youth through grassroots community initiatives to take action to address barriers and social norms impeding access to quality education for girls.
  • Objective 3: Motivate leaders, key stakeholders, and other decision-makers to take concrete, positive action to eliminate barriers to girls' education.

Girl Rising seeks a passionate, professional, and experienced Project Director to oversee the planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of the Girl Rising's ENGAGE project, funded by USAID. This exempt position will be based at Girl Rising's campaign headquarters in New York City, with travel required to our 3 target countries: India, Nigeria, and Democratic Republic of Congo. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience implementing USAID programs and managing a multi-country project. Successful candidates will also have deep experience in international development, especially education and gender issues, as well as familiarity with community-level interventions and mass media campaigns that utilize media and storytelling as a tool to shift cultural norms and behaviors.

Scope of Work

Roles and responsibilitiesmay include in consultation with ENGAGE team:

  • Oversee the implementation of the Girl Rising's ENGAGE work plan to bring film and related content to 3 target countries: India, Nigeria, and Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Provide overall leadership of Girl Rising's ENGAGE project, including the identification, planning, and execution of short and long-term objectives and outcomes.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the project, in coordination with Girl Rising leadership and project partners.
  • Assist with final stages of start-up planning, including interviewing and hiring of Country Managers in Nigeria, partnership development, and efforts to localize Girl Rising film and develop customized toolkit materials for advocacy and awareness.
  • Provide technical direction for program activities in the ENGAGE target countries.
  • Supervise 3 country managers based in target countries.
  • In coordination with Girl Rising leadership, organize and oversee steering committee comprised of representatives from main project collaborators, including Intel Corporation, HP, and the Pearson Foundation.
  • Oversee relationships with key NGO partners in target countries, including sub-contractors and sub-grantees.
  • Coordinate primary activities across target countries, including:

-Identification of issues related to girls' education and the key NGO partners

-Distribution of localized Girl Rising content and toolkits to target groups, including NGO beneficiaries (i.e., girls in target countries), corporations, policy influencers, and general public.

-Monitoring and evaluation of ENGAGE project.

  • Assist with management of project budgets, expenditures, project sub-grants, and contracts, to ensure compliance with USAID requirements.
  • Assist with tracking internal financial performance.
  • Investigate problems and design solutions related to project implementation, overall management of program finances, and field personnel.

Competenciesand Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in business, economics, international development, or a related field.
  • Experience managing a multi-country USAID initiative.
  • At least 8 to 10 years of professional experience in international development, gender issues, and/or education policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large-scale project and team across multiple countries/regions.
  • Extensive skills in working with a diverse set of stakeholders, including NGOs, corporations, grassroots organizations, and media outlets.
  • Ability to manage and motivate a diverse team to achieve results and drive toward programmatic outcomes.
  • Ability to oversee the monitoring and evaluation portion of the project.
  • Strong administrative and operations management skills.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and oral and written communication skills.
