Amnesty International is shifting its centralized International Secretariat (IS) into a more strong, coherent and visible presence in strategic locations in the global South.

In the Americas, we are developing a stronger presence by opening a regional office in Mexico City and de-concentrating some of the functions we currently base in the International Secretariat office in London, including our research and campaign capacity. Being closer to the ground will enable us to operate with greater speed and relevance and to be more agile and responsible to the demands of our human rights agenda. Amnesty International is looking for an experienced press officer to lead the organization's media work across the Americas, in order to shape and develop a media profile for its human rights work across the region.

About the role:

This is a new post based in Mexico City that will take strategic ownership of Amnesty International's media strategy in the Americas, creating awareness of human rights as well as bolstering support for Amnesty International and shaping a better future for those in need. This post has been created in order to drive media coverage across national, regional and international media in the Americas in order to promote Amnesty International's campaigning, research, advocacy and growth objectives and an awareness of human rights. You will provide communications that help to develop the human rights agenda and raise awareness of Amnesty International's work in this important region. You will be part of a new team to be based in Mexico covering research and campaigns and will work closely with other communications colleagues and with the media programme in London.

About you:

You are committed to Amnesty International's aims and are highly experienced in the media industry. You have a strong news sense and know how to develop a media strategy and place a story to achieve maximum impact With a background in journalism or public relations, you have a detailed knowledge of the Americas and the region's media, an outstanding sense of news, a passion for human rights and a strong network of media contacts. You communicate fluently in English and Spanish - verbally and in writing - and are skilled in delivering sharp news copy in a timely fashion. You have experience in developing communications strategies and of working with media across the Americas.
