Social Impact (SI) is a Washington, DC-area international development management consulting firm. SI’s mission is to improve the effectiveness of international development programs in improving people’s lives. We provide services globally in the areas of monitoring and evaluation, strategic planning, project and program design, organizational capacity building, and gender and social analysis. SI services cross-cut all development sectors including democracy and governance, health and education, the environment, and economic growth. SI’s clients include US government agencies such as USAID, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the US Department of State, bilateral donors, multilateral development banks, foundations, and non-profits.

Project Objective:

SI is conducting a mid-term performance evaluation of the USAID-supported Regional Investigative Journalism Network (RIJN) activity, which is part of the broader Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). RIJN/OCCRP aims to build citizen demand to reduce corruption, fraud, and other criminal activities through increased exposure to professionally produced investigative journalism. Activities seek to strengthen investigative reporting in the Europe and Eurasia region and to support cross-border investigations on organized crime and corruption. RIJN/OCCRP supports project activities in 13 countries across three sub-regions: Western Eurasia, the Caucasus and the Balkans.

Position Description:

SI is seeking two Research Assistants to conduct systematic content analysis of investigative journalism stories produced in the RIJN/OCCRP regions of support. Each position will have approximately 12 working days for this assignment, and work is anticipated to conclude no later than January 5, 2015. There is no domestic or international travel requirement for this position, and work can be conducted remotely from Washington, DC. Each Research Assistant must have access to a personal computer and internet connection to complete this assignment.

Responsibilities:

· Participate (preferably in-person, but virtual participation is possible) in a content analysis and coding training.

· Review approximately 100 investigative journalism stories in the English language against a set list of indicators and using a standard rating scale.

· Adhere to the guidelines and protocol for content analysis and coding provided by SI.

· Participate in team meetings, as needed, to coordinate progress and consistent application of coding scale.

· Provide progress updates, in writing or verbally, as requested by SI.

· Document complete analysis and rating for each story reviewed adhering to the format provided by SI.

· Submit a summary report identifying any recurring issues or challenges faced in applying the content analysis guidelines.

Qualifications:

· Undergraduate degree required; completed and/or ongoing graduate-level coursework in international studies, political science, media studies, or other relevant fields, strongly preferred.

· Oral and written English language fluency or advanced professional proficiency required.

· Proven experience systematically reviewing and manually coding qualitative data sources, or relevant coursework, preferred.

· Familiarity with the regions in which the RIJN project is implemented preferred.

· Journalism experience, or relevant media coursework preferred.

· Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.

· Demonstrated ability to complete assignments on deadline.
