Background/IRC Summary: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 22 offices across the country ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency through English language classes, job training and placement services, and community participation activities. The Northern California region resettles approximately 1,200 refugees & asylees each year through four sub-offices including Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose and Turlock.
Job Overview/Summary: Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Development Manager is responsible for fundraising, developing and maintaining strategic relationships with external partners, public relations, contract management, and management of volunteer and in-kind donation programs for IRC's Northern California offices including locations in Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose, and Turlock, CA. The specific areas of responsibility and oversight include: donor relations, proposal writing, grants tracking and reporting, fundraising, special events, public relations and outreach. The Development Manager supervises the Volunteer Coordinator and several unpaid interns. As a senior leadership team member, the Development Manager shares responsibility with other program managers for providing effective oversight over all office operations and good stewardship of resources.
The Development Manager works in close coordination with the Executive Director to achieve the follow goals:
Major Responsibilities:
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
- Develop an annual fundraising plan with specific and measurable goals for development of restricted and unrestricted funds in coordination with the Executive Director and IRC Headquarters.
- Write grant proposals to private foundations, federal, state, and city governments, and other grant making entities for IRC programs in collaboration with program staff.
- Research private funding opportunities and serve as the focal point for the development of new proposals and donor cultivation including new individual donors and practice donor stewardship.
- Conduct prospect research on local foundations, corporations, and other philanthropic institutions as potential funding sources.
- Solicit sponsorships for IRC events and programs .
Identify, cultivate, and sustain individual donors through mailings, face-to-face visits, and other creative mechanisms. - Organize annual fundraiser appeals and other special events as applicable.
- Utilize Salesforce to enter and manage donor data, process gifts and acknowledgements.
PUBLIC RELATIONS/COMMUNICATIONS
- Oversee production of the IRC Northern California electronic and print newsletters as well as other publications, sponsorship and press materials, and social media including writing and editing content
- Conduct outreach and networking activities to recruit and educate potential donors, volunteers and constituents.
- Assist Executive Director in raising awareness about IRC and representing the office at meetings, seminars, and forums.
GRANTS MANAGEMENT
- Maintain the grants management tracking and donor tracking system.
- Develop and maintenance contract and grant files for each funded program with consistent documentation standards. • Work closely with program staff to prepare timely interim and final reports to grantors.
- Coordinate with program staff to ensure grants are being implemented in accordance with project agreements and donor requirements.
- Liaise with the headquarters grants and business development staff on all new contracts, grants, and sub-grants.
GENERAL MANAGEMENT DUTIES
- Provide direct supervision and oversight of work to the Volunteer Coordinator. This entails performing all the Human Resources responsibilities associated with supervision and performance management.
- Recruit and train volunteers and interns to support development functions.
- Meet regularly with program staff to create and review development goals.
- Maintain ongoing communication with the Executive Director on status of resource development initiatives and provide timely reports on grant management issues and concerns.
- Other tasks as needed and assigned by the Executive Director
Job Requirements:
- Four year university degree required; graduate degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years prior experience with fundraising, public relations, proposal writing, and other fundraising duties in the nonprofit sector.
- Proven record of foundation relations and successful development of grant proposals
- Experience engaging with private foundation in the Northern CA area preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with grantors, volunteers, partner agencies, government officials, multi-cultural clients and colleagues on all levels.
- Ability to work nontraditional hours including weeknights and weekends as occasionally necessary.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Outlook; CRM platforms.
- Outstanding organizational, leadership and team-building skills: the ability to promote productivity and efficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural environment highly desirable.
