Title: Communications Manager

Reports To: Managing Director

Location:Cambridge, MA

Classification: Full time, salaried (exempt)

I. Overall Responsibility

The Communications Manager has overall responsibility for implementing RefugePoint’s communications plan, including writing and editing newsletters, reports and other materials, managing social media efforts, website design and maintenance, graphic design, materials development and marketing and promotion efforts. The Communications Manager will coordinate with other members of the RefugePoint team.

II. Primary Areas of Responsibility

A. Writing and Editing

· Serves as primary writer for all content, including RefugePoint’s newsletters, quarterly reports, and annual reports; and

· Coordinates the review and editing process of all reports, including liaising with internal staff in the Cambridge office and abroad, as well as with external stakeholders;

B. Social Media and Web Presence

· Leads the generation of online content, including the ongoing design, development and maintenance of RefugePoint’s website and social media presence;

· Monitors effectiveness of RefugePoint’s digital and social media efforts; and

· Monitors media activity related to our programmatic areas

C. Branding and Materials Development

· Refines and implements RefugePoint’s branding strategy and effectively communicate this strategy throughout the organization;

· Serves as the agency’s graphic designer for both print and digital content;

· Manages development, distribution, and maintenance of print, photographic/videographic and electronic collateral; and

· Creates and implements a marketing and promotion plan.

D. General Communications

· Works closely with the development team and other staff to develop, implement, and evaluate annual communications efforts;

· Supports the development and maintenance of communication/information dissemination systems for use with HQ staff, Nairobi staff and staff deployed in locations across Africa;

· Develops communication activities and tools to support partnerships, collaboration and coordination;

· Represents RefugePoint to external stakeholders, donors, and the public; and

· Manages databases for effectively disseminating information and materials.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field and at least five years’ experience in a similar position;

· Experience implementing communications strategies;

· Demonstrated strong writing, editing, proofreading skills, including drafting materials for external publication;

· Ability to quickly grasp programmatic messaging to ensure accurate and professional message dissemination;

· Experience developing professional and engaging content online and on social media;

· At least two years’ experience with graphic design for both print and digital content;

· Excellent project management and time management skills;

· Must be tech savvy and have a strong understanding of current trends in digital media and social media;

· Solid understanding of Website design and maintenance;

· Comfortable working in a Mac environment and have experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Photoshop;

· Experience with services such as Mailchimp and Basecamp preferred;

· Must be professional, personable, and able to maintain positive working relationships with all stakeholders;

· Ability to travel, including possible international travel; and

· Knowledge of and/or experience working in the refugee field an added advantage, but not required.
