Hôpital Albert Schweitzer

Founded in 1956, Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti (HAS) is a health system comprising a referral hospital of 131 beds that provides surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, maternity care, diagnostic services and rehabilitation; four community health centers; and community development programs. The referral hospital accepts patients referred from its own community health centers, from health centers run by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and from other healthcare organizations.

Hôpital Albert Schweitzer is a model for health care facilities in developing countries around the world. An integrated rural health system, HAS provides medical care and community health and development programs for more than 345,000 people in the Artibonite Valley in central Haiti.

HAS strives to meet the changing needs of the population. Services added in the past three years include physical rehabilitation and an orthotics and prosthetics clinic established for the care of amputees whose injuries resulted from the earthquake of January 2010. The hospital has 14 full-time doctors and 75 nurses of Haitian nationality, supported by visiting specialists from the U.S. and Europe. In total, HAS employs approximately 550 employees.

HAS serves an area of ??981 square kilometers. Emergency patients are received without delays and do not need a referral. The hospital typically receives more than 100 outpatients each day. About half of the hospitalizations are pediatric cases.

In addition to inpatient care, HAS provides primary care in four community health centers, and promotes community development and improved public health through agricultural consulting and water and well programs that bring communities access to clean water..

The History of HAS

In 1947, Larry and Gwen Mellon were inspired by an article in LIFE Magazine about the humanitarian work of Dr. Albert Schweitzer in Africa and his ethic of "reverence for life." They began a correspondence with Dr. Schweitzer. The impact of their communication was a decision taken by the Mellons to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Schweitzer and establish a hospital to care for those in need in Haiti.

On June 26, 1956, the hospital was opened and, with the permission of Dr. Schweitzer, was named after him. At the entrance of the hospital, the words 'Reverence for Life' were inscribed, the philosophical foundation of the thoughts and actions of Dr. Schweitzer. This principle has guided Mr. and Mrs. Mellon in their work to support the needs of the population of the Artibonite Valley. Larry passed in 1989, and Gwen managed the hospital with wisdom and grace until her death in 2000.

Today the hospital is governed by a multinational Board of Directors, and is professionally managed under the direction of a CEO with deep experience in international healthcare management.
