GENERAL FUNCTION

An ICT Programs project will produce a comprehensive, cutting-edge systems administrator guide to be used by system administrators at local NGOs worldwide. The technical research intern will provide research, create network diagrams/infographics, and other elements of the guide as described below. The paid internship is for up to 20 hours per week for approximately two months and is based in Washington DC. The opportunity will provide the intern with first-hand knowledge applying and publishing system administrator-level best practices within an international context.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Assist the Director of ICT Programs, Senior Adviser of ICT Programs and other staff for completion of a guide for computer systems administrators;
  • Research network and operational security best practices;
  • Collate and draft elements of the system administrator guide under staff supervision and guidance;
  • Design activities and exercises as part of the guide to help system administrators understand risks, create threat models and test technical network and operation security protocols;
  • Produce network diagrams, flowcharts or other technical diagrams as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ideal candidate will have recently completed or currently undertaking a local undergraduate program in computer engineering, computer science, or other closely related IT discipline with demonstrated interest in human rights;
  • Knowledge of internet/ communications/ media or international development;
  • knowledge of cyber security analysis, incident response, or related experience;
  • Knowledge of network defense monitoring tools and systems, information assurance assessment tools, encryption technologies, and identity and authentication technologies;
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Visio to create network diagrams and other technical concepts;
  • Understanding of database structure and queries;
  • Understanding of network services, vulnerabilities and attacks;
  • Ability to organize, plan, and prioritize multiple tasks so that work is completed on schedule;
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and project information clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, writing, communications, and briefing skills.
