GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Social Innovations Manager will oversee Mercy Corps’ management of the Innovation Investment Alliance, a $40m social investment fund jointly capitalized by USAID and the Skoll Foundation. The Manager will also advise, at 25-50% of time, Mercy Corps’ social innovations work across the agency. In his or her role managing the Alliance, the Manager will oversee partner management and track portfolio progress, and will work with the Alliance team to manage the process of investment selection, due diligence, structuring, performance management, communications, and knowledge management.

PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

Mercy Corps Headquarters Program team supports the design, coordination, implementation of our interventions and leverages learning. The Innovation Investment Alliance program rests in our innovations portfolio, as does the Mercy Corps Social Venture team. Mercy Corps is working to be the leading INGO in applying technology solutions and new business models to optimize the impact and effectiveness of our programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1)Innovation Investment Alliance(67% of role)

Leadership and Strategy

  • Execute and refine Alliance operations to achieve impact and program goals
  • Meet, manage, communicate and negotiate partner expectations
  • Identify and track innovations across range of development sectors
  • In partnership with on-staff Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) specialist, advance cutting-edge M&E strategies
  • Participate in industry conversation on new development models and techniques

Fund and Program Management

  • Manage, research, and prioritize a pipeline of investment opportunities
  • Lead due diligence efforts on potential opportunities
  • Synthesize innovations, technical, compliance, and program requirements to prioritize strongest opportunities
  • Develop recommendations, memos, and applications for funding
  • Support potential investment organizations to structure program, budget, reporting, etc.
  • Track and report on performance of investment portfolio
  • Oversee knowledge management and external communications of Alliance lessons
  • Oversee program team, budget and milestones

2) Social Innovations team(33% of role)

The candidate will also work with Mercy Corps’ Chief Innovation Officer to improve the integration and uptake of new techniques and practices across Mercy Corps’ field and headquarters teams.

This is a new role that will likely include:

  • Testing, refining, and sharing new development models and approaches across the agency
  • Promoting a culture of innovation through strategies such as ideation sessions, information exchanges, trainings, and innovation challenges
  • Defining and tracking metrics and key performance indicators about innovation performance
  • Maintaining a knowledge database of key innovations within Mercy Corps and within the broader sector

Accountability to Beneficiaries: Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts towards accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Senior Program Officer, M&E Specialist, Assistant Program Officer

ACCOUNTABILITY:

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Chief Innovation Officer

WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Innovation Investment Alliance team, External partners at USAID and the Skoll Foundation, external social entrepreneurs, Social Ventures team, field staff, technical teams

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • MBA or equivalent experience
  • 5-10 years experience in the innovations or impact investing sectors
  • Strong familiarity and experience working with the US government, preferably USAID
  • Experience managing complex programs and teams
  • Extremely adept at partner management
  • Strong strategic thinking skills. Able to navigate complex environments and develop a clear, focused, and ambitious vision.
  • Prior demonstrated interest in creating positive social impact highly desirable
  • Sales or business development skills highly desirable
  • Excellent leadership, communication and teamwork skills

SUCCESS FACTORS:

The ideal Social Investments Manager will possess outstanding people skills and an ability to positively interact with a range of partners. The Manager will understand cutting-edge innovation approaches, as well as more “traditional” USAID programming. The Manager will need to problem solve and create unconventional solutions to build a culture and process that effectively bridges the cultures of the U.S. government, a foundation and NGO. The successful Manager will have a consensus-oriented style. A sense of humor and passion for work is also essential. S/he will have excellent communication skills at all levels, from front-line employees to senior leadership.

LIVING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Position is based at a Mercy Corps office ideally in Portland, Oregon or Washington DC. Travel is estimated at approximately 25%, which may involve both domestic and international travel.

Mercy Corps Team members represent the agency both during and outside of work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/TDY to a field posting. Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and Mercy Corps’ policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
