The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) is seeking a part-time consultant to serve as an Editor for the CSO Sustainability Index.

ICNL works to achieve legal environments that strengthen civil society, advance the freedoms of association and assembly, foster philanthropy, and enable public participation around the world. ICNL works with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Management Systems International, Inc. to produce a number of regional editions of the CSO Sustainability Index (CSOSI), USAID's premier instrument for tracking the development of CSO sectors in Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East/North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Responsibilities:

The consultant will report to ICNL’s CSO Sustainability Index Program Manager. The consultant will be responsible for managing, reviewing, editing and finalizing for publication edited reports on the sustainability of the CSO sectors in multiple countries. Examples of the Index can be found here. Specifically, the consultant will be responsible for producing the following deliverables:

  • Edited country reports for one or more regional editions of the CSOSI. Country reports are written by local partners, who are generally non-native English speakers. Editing will include review and revision for accuracy, completeness, and consistency of content; clarity; proper English usage, including style, grammar, spelling, and punctuation; presentation; and consistent citation format.The consultant will communicate with the local partners to clarify language and ensure that reports are complete and consistent with reports from previous years.
  • Attendance at meetings of the DC-based Editorial Committee for one or more regional editions of the CSOSI. The consultant will be responsible for recording decisions of the Editorial Committee and incorporating input from the Editorial Committee and USAID missions into reports.
  • Draft Executive Summaries for the various editions of the CSOSI.

The workload will vary from week to week, but ICNL anticipates that the Editor will need to work 20-30 hours a week from December 2014 to May 2015.

Qualifications:
Fluency in English and superior editing and writing skills are key requirements, as is familiarity with civil society development issues. The Project Editor must also demonstrate organizational skills and the ability to work under tight deadlines.

Competitive daily rates based on experience and qualifications.
