United Nations Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary- General on Sexual Violence in Conflict

Org. Setting and Reporting:

The Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict (OSRSG-SVC) was established by UN Security Council resolution 1888 (2009). Administratively under the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), the OSRSG-SVC is an independent Office reporting to the Secretary-General and the Security Council. The Office is looking for a dynamic Intern/Volunteer starting in September 2014. The internship is unpaid and can be part-time or full-time.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of Communications Officer, the incumbent will develop a new campaign website for OSRSG-SVC, redesign and maintain two existing websites StopRapeNow.org and un.org/sexualviolenceinconflict and carry out communication activities as required.

• Manage, maintain and develop website content, including technical and graphic-design implementation.

• Ensure consistency in information architecture, content taxonomy and design principles.

• Devise and implement strategies in connection with relevant sections to provide an online repository for documents related to the women, peace and security agenda and sexual violence in conflict, with a clear focus on user-friendliness.

• Act as the focal point for web components with internal and external stakeholders of projects related to the OSRSG-SVC campaigns.

• Advance research tool; act as editor for the websites, checking information for updates and accuracy. Initiate and coordinate the production of content.

• Develop and implement best practices for web operations, both technical and content-related.

• Advise the Communications Team on web issues and opportunities, notably by analysing websites’ usage statistics. Undertake regular and comprehensive reviews and evaluations of the accessibility and ergonomy of the site, operating platforms and software applications. Report technical issues.

• Perform other communications duties assigned by Communications Officer in support of OSRSG-SVC’s communication and outreach.

Education:

The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for the OSRSG-SVC Internship Programme:

  1. Applicants are enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship;
  2. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.

Work Experience:

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish are desirables.

Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or papers based on such information except with the explicit authorization of OSRSG-SVC. As this internship is technical, candidates who cannot be in New York, but can contribute substantive time remotely may apply.
