BACKGROUND:
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them achieve self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK:
The Marketing Intern(s) will work with the Senior Resettlement Program Manager to conduct a market analysis for IRC-Baltimore’s expanding community interpreter program. The intern(s) will assess demand for a new interpreter service among businesses, healthcare providers, school systems, and other organizations throughout the Baltimore area. The intern(s) will also research existing interpreter services and make recommendations in order to ensure the competitiveness of the IRC’s program. The market analysis will be used to inform the interpreter program’s business plan and help secure start-up funds. Additional duties include designing and implementing marketing strategies after the market analysis is complete. This unpaid internship is a great opportunity to gain experience in market research and business development while becoming familiar with nonprofit operations and building strong community connections.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assess and encourage demand for a new, high-quality, cost-effective, in-person and over-the-phone interpreter service in the Baltimore area.
- Determine the expectations of potential customers in terms of pricing, availability, and training of interpreters.
- Investigate the quality and affordability of existing interpreter services.
- Make recommendations about the fee structure of the interpreter service, as well as about interpreter training and compensation.
- Identify organizations interested in engaging IRC’s interpreters, securing commitments and forming partnerships with the approval of the Senior Resettlement Manager.
- Design and implement strategies to market the interpreter service to potential customers.

REQUIREMENTS:
· MBA student or MBA holder.
· Experience or training in market analysis.
· Excellent communication and organizational skills.
· Track record of producing work in a timely manner.
· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
TIME COMMITMENT:
This is a project-based internship. Intern(s) will work until the project is finished, with a target completion date of November 1, 2014. Intern(s) may be offered the opportunity to continue the internship for a duration agreeable to the intern(s) and the IRC.
