Family Alliance is a US-based, 501(c)(3)-registered non-profit organization established to support the work of Family for Every Child, a global alliance of national non-profits working together to improve the care of children worldwide. Family Alliance’s mission is to mobilize the power of supporters, donors and partners in the US in support of the work of Family for Every Child.

Together, we use our wealth of local experience and knowledge generated over years of working directly with children to advocate for and achieve better care for children globally. Together we work towards a world where every child can grow up safe and protected in families and be provided with quality alternative care when needed.

Family Alliance is currently looking to recruit new members for its Board of Directors. We are looking for engaged professionals with solid expertise in External Relations, fundraising and communications in the US who - in coordination with the Board’s President and other Directors - will be able to inform and support Family Alliance’s fundraising strategy through initiatives such as:

  • introduction to relevant contacts and/or identification of relevant opportunities
  • hosting of external relations events
  • guidance on communication tailored for the US market
  • acting as an ambassador for Family Alliance in the US development sector.

Person Specifications:

The new Board members should have:

  • experience in philanthropy or any aspect of fundraising (institutional, individuals, major donors, donor-relations etc.) or external/public relations or communication in the development sector in the US;
  • experience with corporate communication (branding, media contacts, social media, online platforms)
  • good public speaking skills
  • a passion for international development, social justice, child care and the pooling of expertise and knowledge through networks
  • prior experience with networks, alliances and coalitions or with child protection and care as well as a portfolio of contacts within the main US grant-making markets would be an asset

Although our new Board members should be be resident in the US, we are looking for individuals with the right capabilities and qualifications without regard to race, color, gender, religion, age, national origin or any other protected characteristic as established by law.

All Board members of Family Alliance are expected to have the following knowledge, expertise and commitment:

  • good, independent judgment and the ability to provide strategic guidance
  • understanding of and empathy with Family Alliance’s vision, mission, values and beliefs
  • understanding of the role Family Alliance plays in support of Family for Every Child
  • understanding of and interest for the value of networks and working within a network or decentralized organization
  • an interest in understanding the issues Family is seeking to address and the impact we aim to achieve
  • understanding or commitment to acquire an understanding of the primary legal duties of non-profits under the New York State Office of the Attorney General

Prior experience of working with or on a Board of a non-profit, while desirable, is not an essential requirement for Board members.

General Responsibilities:

All Board members of Family Alliance are expected to act on the following duties:

  • to ensure that Family Alliance complies with all relevant legislation or regulations
  • to ensure that Family Alliance pursues its mission and objectives as defined in the organization’s by-laws as well as in Family Alliance’s strategy
  • to contribute actively to the Board of Directors in giving firm strategic direction to the organization, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • to ensure effective communication and collaboration with the Board of Trustees of Family for Every Child so as to make sure that Family Alliance’s activities support delivery of the Family for Every Child global strategy
  • to safeguard the good name and values of Family Alliance and of Family for Every Child
  • to ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organization
  • to ensure the financial stability of the organization
  • to protect and manage the property of the organization and to ensure proper investment of funds
  • to represent Family Alliance externally
  • to adhere to Family Alliance’s Child Protection Policy

Other Duties:

In addition to the above duties, each board member should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help Family Alliance’s Board of Directors reach sound decisions. This includes:

  • critiquing/reviewing board papers
  • leading discussions
  • focusing on key issues
  • providing guidance on new initiatives
  • other issues in which the Board member has special expertise.

In all actions, elected board members must remain conscious of the fact that, as a Board, all conflicts of loyalty are to be avoided or disclosed. Decisions must be taken solely with the best interests of Family Alliance in mind.

Commitment:

It is anticipated that there will be four quarterly Family Alliance Board meetings a year:

  • two ‘virtual’ meetings by electronic means, lasting 2-3 hours each
  • two physical meetings to be held at a location in the USA to be determined by the Board according to other opportunities

In addition, Board members may be requested to:

  • provide support and guidance to the Chief Executive as well as the External Relations team and other staff in between meetings, through conference calls or email exchanges;
  • attend events and conferences on behalf of Family Alliance

Conditions:

This is a volunteer position with no remuneration. All reasonable expenses related to pre-approved travels and activities will be reimbursed.
