Summary:

International Relief and Development (IRD) is hiring a Senior Agriculture and Agribusiness Specialist (SAAS). The Senior Agriculture Specialist is responsible for helping to build the Food and Agriculture Systems Unit (SFAS) in agriculture, agribusiness, and food security by developing the unit’s knowledge management products and service solutions to increase sales, improve marketing, and demonstrate IRD’s thought and technical leadership. The SAAS will help grow IRD’s services to agricultural and agribusiness clients, deliver superior technical support to IRD projects, provide technical input for proposals and build a network that connects IRD projects, staff, and clients. The SAAS will collaborate with the members of other IRD Sectors to build the firm’s competitive advantage in delivering technical services to IRD’s donors. This position is located at IRD’s Arlington, Virginia headquarters.

Essential Job Functions:

Follow trends in the international market that influence the development of annual new business plans and participate in setting new business priorities. Help strategize winning approaches for bid opportunities. Organize and lead reconnaissance efforts in target countries. Track and follow-up on business intelligence related to bid opportunities. Serve as a technical lead in writing winning proposals. Manage/coordinate proposal development teams for agricultural and agribusiness bids/tenders.

Participate in the development and implementation of a multi-year, multi-client plan to expand work in the agriculture and agribusiness fields, focusing on products and services that address the needs of clients and beneficiaries in local, national, regional, and international locations. Coordinate with IRD staff to align IRD’s technical capabilities with private and public sector client needs.

Market the SFAS portfolio and support marketing and sales plans undertaken by IRD Business Development Unit. Support efforts to build recognition of IRD’s capabilities, experiences, and results/impacts with clients through marketing efforts that improve the positioning of IRD’s brand of quality and value. Help build and grow strategic client relationships and serve as a technical point of contact with key clients as assigned.

Provide and support technical leadership and services of the SFAS Unit. Assist in the engagement with IRD Chiefs of Party (COPs) or project directors and project teams to identify, adapt, and refine technologies, tools, and approaches to provide cost effective solutions for current and new projects. Work closely with IRD teams to capture technical achievements, lessons learned, and best practices in agriculture and agribusiness activities from field projects and short-term consultancies to support traditional and diversified client sales and growth. Participate in cross-sector process improvement and strategic planning teams.

Lead trainings and information sharing sessions in agriculture and agribusiness and work directly with IRD Field offices to build their agricultural and agribusiness capacity including in-staff rotation from IRD headquarters to build long-term relationships with local offices and clients.

Support projects as requested by USG and other donors to ensure a high standard of technical excellence in delivery of results according to client expectations. Actively participate across IRD Units and regions to integrate agricultural and agribusiness services with other core IRD competencies.

Undertake short-term technical assignments, typically ranging from one to six weeks, providing technical services in the field, delivering high quality technical reports, assessments, and recommendations.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • · Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience and a Bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, agronomy, or a related degree; or 7 years of experience and a Master’s degree in agricultural economics, agronomy, MBA, or a related field.
  • · Demonstrated new business success (participating on winning proposals) with a range of clients, including USAID and other USG, international and/or private sector clients.
  • · Experience in designing, evaluating, and consulting on projects and Global Practice themes.
  • · Ability to work effectively across technical areas, to develop technical approaches that integrate or leverage resources in different parts of the company.
  • · Technical knowledge and skills as evidenced by project leadership and results, publications, and reports and public presentations.
  • · Excellent communication (verbal and written), organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • · Willingness to travel internationally on extended assignments.
  • · Fluency in English required.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • · Regional experience in Africa, Southern/South East Asia
  • · 2 years of international work experience
  • · Degree and/or experience in staple food crops
  • · Good quantitative skills in financial and economic analysis
  • · Basic knowledge of GIS and ability to produce Google Maps
  • · Understanding of market development approaches to systemic development
  • · Professional proficiency (FSI 3-4) or fluency (FSI – 5) in a second language; ideally French

Travel Requirements:Up to 40%

Physical Requirements:Normal Office Conditions.
