Position Summary

The Development Associate will assist the Development Office to implement strategies for securing and sustaining financial support from a portfolio of foundation grants, and individual and corporate donors on behalf of Freedom House. The Development Associate will manage the day-to-day responsibilities of fundraising. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Development Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Strong interest in development and fundraising
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, and persuasive written and oral communication skills
  • Commitment to assisting the department in attaining its fundraising goals and objectives
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times
  • Proficiency with MS Office; and ability to learn a donor database such as “Salsa”
  • Outstanding organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain composure, flexibility, and a sense of humor under tight deadlines

Some Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date donor database
  • Process and record contributions and donor acknowledgements
  • Assist in sending communication and tracking a caseload of active donor activities
  • Work in a collegial manner with all staff and donors
  • Assist with special projects and events
  • Research and identify major gift prospects, foundation prospects and individual donors; create and maintain prospect files
  • Maintain donor records, create queries and reports, and mange donor acknowledgment process
  • Manage administrative tracking of proposals, renewal, individual donor and development programs
