Summary
The Newborn Health Advisor, MCSP will work with the Newborn Team Lead to provide technical direction and support to newborn health programming on the USAID flagship maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) project, the Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP). MCSP works at the global, regional and country level to introduce and/or expand key newborn interventions including: essential newborn care, neonatal resuscitation, care for preterm births including Kangaroo Mother Care and use of antenatal corticosteroids, and identification and management of newborn infections. The Newborn Health Advisor will support the integration of newborn health interventions into other MCSP technical areas such as maternal and child health, and family planning as appropriate. S/he will be responsible for maintaining coordination and collaboration with other key stakeholders in newborn health for MCSP including other US-based, bilateral and multilateral partners, professional associations and academic entities, and host country governments.
Responsibilities
The Newborn Health Advisor, MCSP will be responsible for contributing to the overall vision for and global leadership of MCSP’s newborn strategy, including supporting learning priorities and establishing and maintaining links with key global stakeholders. S/he will be responsible for providing technical leadership in the development, implementation and monitoring of MCSP country programs including the development of tools and resources for the delivery, scale-up and documentation of high-impact newborn health interventions at community and facility levels. S/he will contribute to global strategies for addressing the three leading causes of newborn deaths – birth asphyxia, preterm births and newborn infections – through collaboration with MCSP partners, including the maternal health team, and through participation in relevant global working groups, conferences and meetings. Lastly, s/he will be responsible for maintaining coordination and collaboration with other key stakeholders in newborn health for MCSP including other US-based, bilateral and multilateral partners, professional associations and academic entities, and host country governments.
Requirements
- Midwifery degree, with advanced training in public health.
- At least 5 years’ experience in the design, implementation and monitoring of newborn health programs, particularly in Africa and South East Asia.
- Experience with key international organizations working in newborn health (e.g., UN agencies, donors, academic institutions, and USAID-funded Cooperating Agencies).
- Ability to develop and monitor new approaches and apply best practices in newborn health.
- Demonstrated management, planning, supervisory, and leadership skills.
- Ability to think critically, strategically, and operationally.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and as a team member with diverse headquarters, field office, and partner agency staff.
- Ability to work well under pressure and in team situations and meet deadlines.
- Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheet software packages and PowerPoint.
- Excellent English writing and communication skills in maternal, newborn, and child health policy and research issues. Experienced public speaker.
- Excellent French Language skills preferred
- Ability to travel at least 30 percent internationally.
