Background:
Mercy Corps Ethiopia is implementing the Pastoralist Areas Resilience Improvement through Market Expansion (PRIME) project. PRIME is a five-year, USAID funded initiative designed to improve resilience of communities and systems in Ethiopia’s drylands to enhance prospects for long-term development where pastoralist livelihood systems prevail. PRIME is designed to reduce hunger and poverty by being transformative and innovative. PRIME’s overall objective – increasing household incomes and enhancing resilience to climate change through market linkages – is supported by five pillars that define how the project will be conducted.
Pillar 1: Productivity and competitiveness – PRIME is helping to improve access to and availability of quality livestock inputs, including feed, fodder and animal health services.
Pillar 2: Adaptation to a changing climate – PRIME is improving early warning and related climate information systems for decision making.
Pillar 3: Alternative livelihood options – PRIME seeks to improve livelihood options for people transitioning out of pastoralism, especially youth and women.
Pillar 4: Improved nutrition – Through a variety of tailored social and behavioral change communication mechanisms, PRIME is facilitating enhanced nutrition practices, increasing the demand for nutritious food, improving household decision-making for equitable access to nutrition, leveraging private sector investment for nutrition support and informing policy practices regarding nutrition and food security.
Pillar 5: Evidence-based learning – PRIME is supporting and enabling and learning environment for livestock market improvements, climate adaptation, alternative livelihoods and utilization of nutritional products and knowledge.
